Hawaiian Mountain Apple Pie Recipe: A Delightful Taste of Hawaii

Our mountain apple tree is going off the charts once again, so we thought we'd try out a new way to use them before they start going bad. Welcome to Snack Hawaii's kitchen, where we celebrate the unique flavors of the islands with our Hawaiian Mountain Apple Pie Recipe! If you've ever tasted a fresh Mountain Apple, you know its delicate, floral notes are truly special. These beautiful fruits are found throughout Hawaii, but are definitely more easily found on the outer islands. There are two varieties – Red (more common) and Green (our favorite, with a more delicate floral taste). In other countries, mountain apples are also known as waxy apples or rose apples.

This Mountain Apple Pie Recipe is a true tropical delight, offering a lighter, fragrant twist on classic apple pie. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the seasonal bounty of Hawaiian Mountain Apples and bring a unique taste of paradise to your table. Get ready to bake a Hawaiian dessert that captures the essence of island tradition!

Tips for Perfect Hawaiian Mountain Apple Pie

To ensure your Hawaiian Mountain Apple Pie turns out perfectly every time, keep these valuable tips in mind:

  • Working with Mountain Apples:

    • Selection: Choose firm, blemish-free mountain apples. Both red and green varieties work well, with green offering a slightly more delicate floral taste.

    • Preparation: After peeling and coring, slice the apples consistently (1/2-inch thick is ideal) to ensure even cooking. Mountain apples have a softer texture than common baking apples, so they’ll cook down beautifully.

    • Freshness: Use them soon after harvesting for the best flavor and texture.

  • Why Cook Apples Halfway:

    • Cooking the mountain apples on the stove until the liquid reduces and they are "cooked about halfway" is a crucial step. This pre-cooking concentrates their delicate flavor, softens them slightly, and prevents the pie from having a watery filling. It also ensures the apples are tender without over-baking the crust.

  • Crust Variations:

    • While our simple butter crust is delicious, you can experiment! For an even more tropical twist, consider a buttery graham cracker crust or a crushed shortbread cookie crust. These alternatives complement the Hawaiian flavors beautifully and can be quicker to prepare.

  • Yield & Storage:

    • This Hawaiian Mountain Apple Pie Recipe typically yields one 9-inch pie, serving 6-8 people generously.

    • Store any leftover pie covered loosely at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. While it's best enjoyed fresh, it's still delicious reheated gently!

  • Serving Suggestions:

    • This Hawaiian dessert is truly delightful served warm, allowing its fragrant aromas to fill the air.

    • For the ultimate indulgence, serve a slice with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, a dollop of freshly whipped cream, or a drizzle of Lilikoi Passion fruit Butter for an extra tropical touch.

  • 2-3 cups mountain apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 stick of softened butter
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup flour

  1. Cream the butter and the sugar. Then add the flour and mix. Place the dough into a 9-inch pie pan and press it with your fingers until the pan is covered evenly.
  2. Put your cut up mountain apples, salt, cinnamon, sugar, butter, and lemon juice into a pot and cook on the stove until the liquid is reduced and apples are cooked about halfway.
  3. Remove from heat and add your flour to thicken.
  4. If you're lazy like me and don't want to make a top, cut out some leaf shapes and place on top.
  5. Pour into pie crust and bake at 350 degrees for about 35-45 minutes.
  6. Cool before slicing.

There you have it – a truly unique and delightful Hawaiian Mountain Apple Pie that offers a refreshing taste of the islands!
